Our Philosophy

At SSIS, our mission is to help every student thrive intellectually and personally, in a safe, caring environment. Safeguarding is central to this mission. We believe that all children have the right to grow up safe from harm and to learn in a community built on respect, trust, and care.

What We Commit To

Who Is Responsible?

Designated Safeguarding Lead (DSL)

The DSL is a senior leader who coordinates safeguarding efforts across the school. Our current Designated Safeguard Lead (DSL) is Daniel Kerr, who also serves as our Middle School Principal. DSLs lead investigations, support students and families, and train staff. They also convene “Team Around the Child” meetings when necessary.

Parents

Parents play an integral role in safeguarding, and agree to uphold our safeguarding policies when enrolling their child. We expect honest, timely communication around any concerns at home or school.

Counselors

Our divisional full-time counselors help students navigate challenges and coordinate support. They maintain confidentiality but share key concerns with the DSL when needed.

There are two counselors in elementary school, two counselors in middle school, and four counselors in high school. Each high schooler is assigned a counselor at the end of grade 8 with whom they will stay for the duration of their high school years.

How to Report a Concern

Anyone in our community—staff, students, or parents—can report a safeguarding concern.

  • Call your child’s principal
  • Fill out a self-report or low-level concern form
