Small Moments that Shape Big Growth

Small Moments that Shape Big Growth
Tanya Olander

“I've waited all year for this!” exclaimed one Grade 6 student, pulling on their new House League shirt for the very first time. With cheers and claps, these new middle schoolers were welcomed into the houses they will belong to all the way through graduation.

The House League gives students a chance to feel part of a team within the school. Beginning in Middle School, every student joins one of four houses—Wyvern, Shenlong, Naga, or Hydra—that come together for activities, games, and friendly competitions, collecting points along the way. What makes these shirts meaningful goes beyond the fabric—it's the structure they represent and the journey ahead. As Middle School Principal Dan Kerr explains, “These shirts truly mean something, and they make the students feel like they are part of something special, and bigger than themselves.”

Building Connection Beyond the Classroom

Beyond house competitions, students have also had other moments for connection. The Middle School Social, a few weeks into the school year, is a chance for students in Grades 6-8 to simply enjoy being together. At the social in September, small groups gathered over foosball and board games, some played basketball, and others shared snacks and conversation. Teachers were right there in the mix, celebrating that joy and showing students that connection is part of what learning looks like.

Events like these are intentionally planned to strengthen relationships, ease the transition into the year, and help students feel at home in the community. That sense of belonging matters deeply at this stage of a child's development. Middle School students want independence, yet they still need reassurance. They crave belonging, yet they test their individuality. It's why our programs are deliberately designed to help students explore, connect, and grow into who they are becoming.

Discovering Their Voices Through the Arts

That same care also shapes life during the school day. Belonging is not only about friendships—it's also about having the confidence to share your voice, take risks, and discover new strengths. Just as mathematics builds logic, the performing arts build confidence. That's why every student in Grades 6-8 chooses at least one performing arts class, from band, strings, orchestra, drama, dance, musical theater, electronic music, or podcasting and audio production.

These experiences are woven together with academic classes, advisory sessions, house events, and service opportunities to create a comprehensive journey. Our purpose-built middle school facility makes this integrated approach possible, from the Blackbox Theater at the heart of the building to flexible classrooms and collaboration spaces, every corner reflects the belief that children at this stage deserve their own place to grow.

Growing Alongside Our Families

Of course, this journey isn't only about the students. Parents are navigating these years as well, often with their own questions: What matters most at this age? How do we support it? That partnership is central at SSIS.
It comes through in simple yet meaningful ways, such as sharing real conversations at parent coffees, attending support sessions, or taking part in the Parent Partnership series. Sessions such as This Is Middle School, The Culture Map, and Understanding Your Middle School Child open windows into what students are experiencing and give families space to reflect on how best to support their child.

Walking this journey together—parents connecting at a partnership session.

Whether in a small gathering or a larger session, the intention is the same: to walk this journey together. These years are full of transformation, and every milestone—whether a house shirt, a foosball game, or a first stage performance—adds to a child's journey of growth and belonging. We share this experience as a community, finding meaning and pride in each moment along the way.

Moments of laughter and connection build belonging and nurture growth.

Have a look at the Middle School Program of Studies to explore the full journey, or join us at an upcoming parent coffee to continue the conversation.
