Imagine walking into an art classroom filled with vibrant digital collages, each telling a unique story of cultural heritage and personal aspirations. This is what it is like to walk into Ms. Rebecca Jardin’s Grade 7 and 8 art class, where students have been on a journey of self-discovery through art.
In the first week of this inspiring unit, students began by delving into their cultural backgrounds through conversations with their parents. They asked thought-provoking questions like, "What do you remember eating, hearing, and celebrating in your childhood?" "How do you think my identity is shaped?" “What value do you hope I model?”
Guided by our passionate Middle School art teacher, Ms. Jardin, students learned that understanding one's roots is the first step in creating meaningful art. "It's rare that a middle school student sits down and asks, 'Can you tell me about yourself and what you value?'" Ms. Jardin explains. "These dialogues offered a special glimpse into family histories and traditions that may not always be openly shared."
From Cultural Roots to Personal Reflections
Once students had explored their cultural backgrounds, they turned inward, using the online mind-mapping tool Coggle to brainstorm their personal traits, interests, and aspirations. Some students chose to focus on their roles in school and at home, while others reflected more about their dreams for the future.
The goal of this exercise was for students to see how their personal experiences and cultural heritage intertwine to shape who they are. As students developed their mind maps, they began to visualize the complex tapestry of their identities.
Bringing Identity to Life Through Art
By the end of the unit, students transformed their cultural and personal reflections into stunning digital collages. These collages are just the first step in a three-part artistic journey that will include mask making and acrylic expressive portraits. In the end, the students will decide how to bring these skill builders together to create a final piece that represents their unique Sense of Self, one of five Core Values that lie at the foundation of teaching and learning at SSIS.
Developing these artistic skills, as students are doing in this class, will serve them well beyond their art studies. This exploration of identity lays the groundwork for more advanced artistic endeavors and a deeper understanding of themselves and others.
We're excited for our Grade 7 and 8 students as they continue to grow as artists and individuals, pushing the boundaries of self-expression and cultural appreciation through their art. Stay tuned for more updates on this exciting journey of self-discovery!
