SSIS senior Vincent’s dedication to the SSIS Core Value "Academic Excellence" has earned him a remarkable distinction – he’s been named a National Merit Commended Student, placing him among the top 2-3% of the 1.3 million students worldwide who took the PSAT in 2023.
This week, Grade 12 student, Vincent, was called to Principal Jennifer Mendes' office. Not knowing what to expect, he was in for a pleasant surprise as he learned of the prestigious recognition he'd received and Principal Mendes presented him with the Letter of Commendation from the National Merit Scholarship Corporation (NMSC). The NMSC is a not-for-profit organization that celebrates students for their academic excellence on the PSAT, the exam that prepares students for the SAT and gauges college readiness.
A Journey of Academic Excellence
Vincent’s path of academic excellence at SSIS began at the age of 3, when he joined our Early Childhood program. Over the years, he has made the most of the opportunities offered at SSIS, thriving in the nurturing academic environment. His Commended Student status is a clear reflection of his dedication to learning, as well as the continuity and consistency of his educational experience, going through the SSIS program, giving him a strong foundation to excel academically and explore his passions.

Opportunities Beyond the Classroom
With interests that extend far beyond the classroom, Vincent has been actively involved in High School clubs like Model United Nations (MUN), Debate, and DECA, which have fueled his passion for public policy and global economics. “Being in these programs has really opened my eyes to the importance of diplomacy and economics,” Vincent says. “It’s helped shape my interest in public policy and making a difference in the world.”

A Purposeful Life as a Global Citizen
Principal Mendes couldn’t be prouder of Vincent’s achievement, saying, “The world needs more people like Vincent—students who excel academically and are committed to making a positive impact. His dedication to his studies and his passion for global issues show the true spirit of what we aim to inspire at SSIS.”
Vincent’s journey aligns with SSIS's mission to inspire students to lead purposeful lives as global citizens. As he prepares for his next steps, applying to top universities, we are confident that his hard work, sense of purpose, and passion will continue to propel him forward. Congratulations, Vincent, on this outstanding achievement!
