Dear HS Parents,

During selected Advisory times in February and March, high school students will begin their unit on Healthy Choices and Decision Making.

In the Healthy Choices and Decision Making unit, students explore topics related to Sexual Health and Drug and Alcohol Awareness. The goals of these lessons are to provide students with information and strategies based on facts.

Young adults benefit from having developmentally appropriate human and sexual health education, as it provides them with the facts and skills to enhance their health and self-esteem.

The topics we will cover related to Sexual Health in each grade level are:

  • Grade 9: Healthy relationships, decision making, consent, sexually transmitted infections (STI) & birth control awareness.
  • Grade 10: Consent, identity, knowing your options, and how to find trusted information online.
  • Grade 11: Relationships, expectations, consent, sexually transmitted infections & birth control revisited, and sexting.
  • Grade 12: Consent and communication skills, and what are my reproductive rights.

The topics we will cover related to Drug and Alcohol Awareness in each grade level are:

  • Grade 10: Alcohol awareness and sense of self, emotional health, peer pressure, and effects of smoking.
  • Grade 11: Addiction, mental health & drugs and what are they.
  • Grade 12: Drug and Alcohol awareness & positive choices, risky behaviors and what are the laws.
  • Young people who are well-informed and comfortable communicating about these topics are believed to be at a lower risk of harm due to sexual activity or from using alcohol or drugs.

Parents may find the following resources helpful in discussing the topics of our Healthy Choices and Decision Making unit at home:
