[G10-11] SAT Preparation Resources
Elisia Brodeur
Dear Grade 10 and 11 Students and Parents,
The SSIS Counseling Team would like to thank those of you who were able to attend our evening presentation last night. If you were unable to attend, you will find our presentation in the weekly SSIS Dragon Digest to be sent on Friday.
As we mentioned, we are sharing some excellent resources to help students prepare for the SAT. The SAT score is an important element for many university applications. The following links identify resources and a planning strategy to help students prepare for the SAT. For parents, here is a Parent Guide to Supporting Students with SAT.
SSIS will host the PSAT (a practice SAT) on Tuesday, October 22. All grade 10 and 11 students are registered for this test and have received preparation information. When the PSAT results are published in late November, every student will receive a detailed score report, including a personalized study plan.
The administrator of the SAT, College Board, provides high-quality preparation programs through Khan Academy and Bluebook. While some families may choose to enroll their children with SAT preparation agencies, these robust (and free) resources offer excellent preparation to help your child achieve the most success.
Using the Khan Academy or Bluebook study plans and resources will ensure that our students are ready for their first official SAT exam. We highly recommend that grade 11 students take their first SAT in March, May, or June 2025. You will need to register and pay for your child’s SAT exam through the College Board website.
For grade 10 students, now is the time to concentrate on classes, grades, and being involved in activities that are of interest. We strongly recommend that grade 10 students take the SAT in Semester 2 of 2026.
If you have any questions, please contact your child’s school counselor.
Sincerely,
SSIS Counseling Team

It is a highly contagious virus that can cause mild flu-like symptoms followed by a rash or blisters in the mouth, on the palms of hands, and on the soles of feet. The virus is spread by touching contaminated surfaces, being exposed to droplets in the air from an infected person, or person-to-person contact. You can read more here: https://www.cdc.gov/hand-foot-mouth/index.html
Symptoms include:
Fever
Not feeling well/flu-like symptoms

Decreased appetite
Drooling due to sores in the mouth
Rash or blisters on palms of hands and soles of feet
Incubation period:
3–6 days from exposure to the start of symptoms
Treatment:

Hydration by drinking plenty of liquids
Over-the-counter medications for fever, as directed. Do not give Aspirin to children.
Prevention:
Frequent hand washing/sanitizing
Frequent disinfection of high-touch surfaces or shared toys
Avoid rubbing eyes, nose, or mouth with unwashed hands
What to do if my child has symptoms:
Contact your child’s medical provider
Keep your child at home for 24 hours after symptoms have resolved and your child is fever-free for 24 hours without fever-reducing medications
Keep your child at home until any open blisters or sores have healed and dried (this can take up to 7-10 days)
Follow up with your child’s medical provider if a fever lasts more than 3 days

Important Update: Increased Measles Cases in HCMC and Vaccination Reminder (Sept 12)
Elisia Brodeur
Dear Parents and Guardians,
We are writing to inform you that there has been a recent increase of Measles in Ho Chi Minh City. Measles is a highly contagious viral illness that can lead to serious complications, especially in children.
To protect your child, as well as our community, it is crucial that they are up-to-date on their vaccinations. Measles is preventable through the MMR/MMRV vaccination. As per the CDC Immunization Schedule, students should receive 2 vaccinations before the age of 6 years old. Catch-up vaccinations of MMR/MMRV can be administered up to the age of 12. For further information or if you have any questions, we advise you to reach out to your healthcare provider.
As per current DOET recommendations, students who are not vaccinated for measles or have one vaccination can receive the vaccination at their local health station or a medical facility.
Symptoms of measles include:
A rash that starts on the face and spreads throughout the body
Fever
Cough
Runny nose
Watery eyes
If you suspect your child may have measles, please contact your healthcare provider immediately. For more information about measles and vaccinations, please visit the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) website at https://www.cdc.gov/measles/index.html.
Please be sure to read our Health Office Handbook and be aware of our school’s sick policy.
Sincerely,
Kerry Brint

[G12] Introduction to Week Without Walls [Week Without Bells] 2024
Elisia Brodeur
Dear Parents of Grade 12 Students,
We are looking forward to the return of one of our Seniors’ hallmark experiences: Week Without Walls. This year, instead of traveling outside of the city, our Seniors will remain on campus and within HCMC for a “Week Without ‘Bells.’” They will focus on:
Growth and Reflection: Preparing for the university application process and deepening their understanding of our school’s Core Values.
Local Excursions and Experiences: During exciting local excursions, students will have the opportunity to bond as a class and create lasting memories.
Community Service: Students will engage in the Value of Dedicated Service by giving back to our community through meaningful service projects.
During their “Week Without ‘Bells,’” our Seniors will focus on the beginning of their transition to graduation by exploring the university application process more deeply. SSIS is excited to be hosting one of the largest University Fairs in the country on September 16, and students will then have the opportunity to reflect on the many top universities they meet at the fair.
Our Seniors will also experience a unique interdisciplinary science project that will take advantage of our new facilities and a dedicated service project. They will also enjoy several excursions, such as a:
waterpark trip
hop-on/hop-off bus tour and photo shoot around the city
At this point, there are two specific items we would like you to do:
Please ensure that your child’s health records are up to date in our Magnus Health system, especially regarding any dietary restrictions, allergies, or required medications.
If you have not yet paid for the WWW experience, the Business office will contact you to ensure payment. Please respond to their communication.
We look forward to sharing more information about this essential and highly memorable part of our learning program at SSIS. Look for further communication next week, including permission slips and an opportunity to share any of your child’s health concerns or dietary needs for the week’s events.
Here’s to making this the best year for our SSIS Seniors!

Also, this year we implemented a new structure for Curriculum Night that enabled parents to meet their child’s teachers and learn about their classes in a relaxed and comfortable way. We would appreciate hearing about your experience at Curriculum Night so we can make adjustments to make it even better next year. Please complete this Curriculum Night 2024 Parent Feedback Survey by Wednesday, August 28.

Grade 12 Students and Parents University Night

Greetings Parents of SSIS Seniors,
Applying to college can be intimidating and challenging, but our SSIS High School Counseling Team offers comprehensive and consistent support. In our effort to make the university application process as clear and organized as possible, we are pleased to invite you and your child to the Grade 12 Students and Parents University Night on Tuesday, August 27, from 6:00 - 7:30 pm in the Auditorium.
An overview of the timeline and process for our seniors
Staying organized is a key factor in preventing students from becoming overly stressed throughout the application process, which is why we give students a step-by-step “to-do” list.
This week, the counselors will hold group meetings with seniors to outline the application process and timeline for UK, US, and European universities. After the group meetings, we encourage the seniors to book individual college planning sessions with their counselor.
Depending on where they are in the application process, counselors will work with students to:
revisit their college research to determine which universities they may be eligible to apply for based on their interests and aptitude
discuss SAT dates and prep, if relevant
review the timeline and process for letters of recommendation
make final university choices based on a strategic range of selectivity (Safety, Target, Reach)
review their college essays
complete and submit their applications
Your role as parents
Whether you have older children who have already been through the application process, or you are completely new to college admissions, we want to include you as much as possible in your senior’s college application journey. Therefore, we are sharing a parent “to-do” list as well:
Check In: Try to check in with your senior once a week but without micromanaging. Encourage them to stay on top of their to-do list. If they don’t know what they should be doing at any point, send them to their counselor!
Manage Expectations: Seniors often discuss their college applications with their friends, which is perfectly normal. However, students can then develop unrealistic expectations for themselves. When you look at university requirements with your child, you can help them make educated choices about the best options for them.
Be Clear: A lot of stress can be reduced in the college application process when you 1) clearly share your hopes and expectations for your senior, and 2) tell them what you are expecting to pay for college. While these conversations may be difficult, your child will be relieved to know these details.
Stay Positive: It can be easy to look at rising college costs, complicated application requirements, and increasing competition and add your worries to your senior’s worries. But your main job in the next few months is to be as supportive, positive, and optimistic as possible.
We look forward to seeing you at the Grade 12 Students and Parents University Night on Tuesday, August 27 at 6:00 pm.
Sincerely,
HS Counseling Team

Health Office Reminders and Information
Elisia Brodeur
Dear SSIS Parents,
As we are settling into the school year, I would like to share some information and reminders about common childhood illnesses among school-aged children.
Hand, Foot, and Mouth Disease:
This is a very common and highly contagious childhood virus that we mostly see in children under 5 years old. However, older children can also be infected. Therefore, it is important to know about this virus, how it spreads, and how to prevent it from spreading. You can read more about Hand, Foot, and Mouth Disease here.
Head Lice:
Head lice is a common parasite that can be spread among younger school-aged children. During back-to-school time it is important to understand what head lice are, how they spread, and how to prevent and treat them. You can read more about Head Lice here.
Your child must stay home from school when they have:
a fever of 37.8°C or higher until they are fever-free for 24 hours without fever-reducing medication
Thank you for joining us for HS Curriculum Night. As promised, I am sharing the slides from the evening:
Please reach out to any one of us with questions as they come up. We are all here to help your child meet with the greatest degree of success possible in high school.

Dear Grade 10 Parents,
Students and faculty alike are extremely excited about the upcoming Week Without Walls (WWW) trips. We are all looking forward to one of the hallmark experiences for our students. This year, our trips will remain in Vietnam, with each location offering a unique and beneficial focus on aspects of our Core Values.
Grade 10 students will travel to Tri An Lake and Hippo Farm for the week of September 23-27. While there, students will take part in activities on themes of permaculture, service, and environmental sustainability. They will also have opportunities to challenge themselves (by choice) through activities such as paddle boarding, hiking, and making their own pizza. There have been notable upgrades at Hippo Farm, allowing for a more ‘glamping’ style experience throughout the trip.
We invite you to join us on Curriculum Night, August 20 at 4:45 pm, to hear from our trip leaders and our provider, Asia Motions. You will hear more about your child’s trip, gain a better understanding of the full Week Without Walls experience, and be able to ask questions.
At this point, there are three specific items we would like to ask of you:
Please ensure that your child’s health records are up to date in Magnus Health.
Please ensure that your child has a valid ID (passport or ID Card) that allows us to register them at the accommodations and with the National Park Service.
If you have not yet paid for the trip, the Business Office will contact you directly; please respond to their communication.
We look forward to sharing more details about this important and memorable part of our learning program at SSIS. Please be on the lookout for more communication next week, including detailed trip information and a permission form that you will need to complete.
We look forward to seeing you at Curriculum Night on August 20.

It has been an outstanding start to the school year, and for me personally, getting to know the many new students has been such a tremendous gift! After the first week of settling in, we are now excited to share more details about the teaching and learning in Middle School for the upcoming school year.
Please join us on campus for Middle School Curriculum Night on Thursday, August 22 beginning at 6:00 pm. You will meet your children’s teachers and hear about what your child will be learning in school this year.
Curriculum Night is an important introduction to the school year and we encourage all parents to attend. Students are not required to attend. Your participation ensures that we begin the year together with the same information and expectations. Developing our parent partnerships is a top priority for us, and we look forward to seeing you all there.
What to Expect
Curriculum Night* is an opportunity to:
Meet each of your child’s teachers
Learn about the courses your child is taking
Experience our learning environment
See the resources we use in our teaching
*Please note that Curriculum Night is not the time to have individual conversations about your child. Please set up a separate meeting with your child’s teacher for this, if necessary.
What to Bring
If you have updated your child’s passport and/or visa (or temporary residence card if your child’s passport is not Vietnamese) within this year, please bring a copy of your child’s updated passport and visa (or TRC), so we can begin the necessary paperwork for our upcoming “Week Without Walls” trips in November.
Schedule
The meeting will start promptly at 6:00 pm in the MS Gymnasium. Immediately after the short welcome, we will share some initial information about our upcoming Week Without Walls trips. Please be on time so you do not miss any important details.
After the presentation, you will go to each of your child’s classes (“blocks”) to meet their teachers and learn about their courses. So you know which blocks to go to, please pick up a copy of your child’s course schedule at the entrance of the Middle School Gym before or after the welcome presentation.

[AS] Health Office Reminders Aug 6 2024
Elisia Brodeur
Dear SSIS Parents,
The Health Office would like to welcome all new and returning students to SSIS for the upcoming 2024-2025 school year. As of last year (23-24), SSIS uses Magnus Health to safely and securely manage and store all student health information. We no longer accept paper documents. This letter is to remind you that before the start of school you MUST:
• Arrange an annual physical examination for your child, per the Ministry of Health
• Complete and update all required documentation on Magnus Health
• Report any changes in your child’s health status to their divisional school nurse
Beginning this school year, any student who has not yet completed the physical exam and Magnus Health requirements will not be able to start school until it is done.
Student Physical Examination Form
Please take the SSIS Physical Examination Form to your child’s medical provider before the start of school. Per the Ministry of Health Joint Circular No:13/2016/TTLT-BYT-BGDDT, your child is required to have a health check each year with a medical provider. This helps to identify any potential health concerns that could impact your child’s physical activity or learning. If your child has a chronic or potentially life-threatening condition, such as seizures, food allergy, anaphylaxis, asthma, or diabetes, your medical provider also needs to complete and sign an action plan and upload it to Magnus. Also, please make sure your child’s vaccines are up to date.
The medication authorization form must be signed by a parent in Magnus Health. If your child’s original prescription is not available, please have the medical provider sign the form as well. You can find our medication policy in the Health Office Handbook.
Sick Policy
The basic requirements are to keep your child at home if they have:
• a fever of 37.8˚C or higher
• 2 or more episodes of vomiting or diarrhea
• any flu-like symptoms (sore throat, headache, body aches, or cough
However, please be sure to read our Health Office Handbook to be aware of our school’s complete sick policy.
Thank you for your support and understanding.
Sincerely,
Kerry Brint
Health Office Manager

The orientation has three parts:

The interview will include a 25-minute conversation with your child’s teacher while your child explores the learning environment with the Teaching Assistants. Please complete this brief “SSIS EC & KG Parent Questionnaire” form as soon as possible before your interview.
2. School Year Preparations
Please use this convenient checklist to make sure your child has everything they need when they begin on their staggered start day. Please complete each item before Thursday, August 8, 2024.

Half of your child’s class will attend school on August 8, and the other half on August 9. Your child’s staggered start day can be found in the email sent to you by the Elementary School Office (on July 30, 2024). Beginning on Monday, August 12, ALL EC and KG students will attend class together.
We look forward to welcoming you at your family interview.

Courtney is excited to join the vibrant community at SSIS and explore more of SouthEast Asia. She looks forward to immersing herself in the culture of Ho Chi Minh City and contributing to the positive environment at SSIS.
Outside the classroom, she enjoys spending time in nature, particularly at the beach, and embraces a holistic lifestyle that includes meditation, reiki, and using food as medicine (she's been a vegetarian for the past 27 years). Courtney also loves to travel, often taking weekend trips to discover new places.

[AS] Important Updates: Student Health Checks and Magnus Health
Tanya Olander
Dear SSIS Parents,
We're excited for your child's return to campus next week.
In line with the Ministry of Health’s Joint Circular No:13/2016/TTLT-BYT-BGDDT, PART 3 – HEALTH SPECIALTY EXAMINATION, every student is now required to have an annual health check form. This initiative aims to identify potential health issues and helps to keep your child safe during school events, field trips, or sports.
Parents whose children have allergies, take daily medications, or need a special emergency plan must set up their account in Magnus, our new health records system, or reach out to our nurses by August 9.
This year, the annual health check form is due by December 1, 2023. From the next academic year, this submission should be done before school starts.
More on Magnus Health
This school year, we are shifting health records from PowerSchool to Magnus Health, ensuring ease of access and security. The Magnus Health platform provides you with secure access to your child’s school health records and the ability to conveniently update and access their health and immunization records. PowerSchool will still be used for students' academic records.
Next Friday, August 11, during the Head of School/PTA Coffee Morning, you will have an opportunity to hear more about Magnus Health. And during orientation on August 8, you can receive help in setting up your account in the Plaza.
You will have until December 1, 2023, to create your Magnus account, complete your child’s profile, and update their health check information. To reiterate: If your child has specific health needs, however, please act promptly and ensure you’ve submitted their information before August 9.
