Inner Explorers | Middle School @ SSIS clone

We believe that your child developing a strong Sense of Self through Middle School is crucial to them realizing their potential in High School.

Knowing how they can best use their aptitudes, how they best adapt to roles in a team, and which habits best serve them when they get to High School are just a few of the benefits of exploring the inner self. To amplify these benefits, our Middle School experience is designed like an adventure of self discovery.

How do we prepare students to make the curricular, social, and life choices that best suit them when they get to High School? Find out below...

The Quest to Seize a Sense of Self

"You've got to find yourself first. Everything else will follow." –Charles de Lint

"Knowing yourself is the beginning of all wisdom." –Aristotle

"The only journey is the journey within." –Rainer Maria Rilke

"One must know oneself. If this does not serve to discover truth, it at least serves as a rule of life, and there is nothing better." –Blaise Pascal

The Call to Adventure

Before embarking on a 3-year journey into the complex landscape of the self throughout grades 6, 7, and 8, our Middle Schoolers are called upon to choose from 15 Exploratory Electives. These are usually students’ favorite classes, and allow them to specify their unique interests, or find out what they don’t like - which can be equally useful.

Exploratory Electives:

  • Art
  • Band
  • Robotics & Coding
  • Public Speaking
  • Dance
  • Drama
  • STEM Crafting
  • Advanced Robotics & Coding
  • EcoMaking
  • Choir
  • Creative Writing
  • Intermediate Dance
  • Yearbook
  • Intermediate Band
  • Creative Technologies

Stepping Into a Magical World

When you visit our Middle School, there’s something you won’t see. You won’t see kids cut-off from reality while mesmerized by their smartphones. You won’t see kids hunched over their laptop ignoring the real world during recess. You won’t see kids walking into door-frames like zombies.

Our ‘Phones Away’ culture and strictly enforced screen-time rules means that MS students engage with each other and with the opportunities on campus. This keeps their mind stimulated by factors conducive to becoming more self-aware.

We provide a stimulating environment during recess with options to XXXX, XXXX, or XXXX. Whatever a student chooses, their recess time will grow their interests rather than growing the userbase of the latest trending mobile game. We think that's magical!

Exploring Extra-Curriculars

Beyond the classroom, our offering of over twenty Middle School Clubs allows students to explore their passions and different social groups.

There, students explore themselves through wellness practices, leadership roles, pursuing social causes, improving academic disciplines, and exploring the arts.

Meet the Mentors for Your Quest

Every student has a dedicated advisory teacher to guide them on their journey of self-discovery. Advisory classes are strongly focused on social and emotional learning, epitomised by the 'Knowing Myself' Advisory Unit which is vertically aligned through grades 6, 7 and 8.

G6 - To explore their self as a person (culture, upbringing, experiences, etc) students complete the Via Institute Character Survey for the first time.
G7 - Explorers delve again into the complex landscape of the self, but this time to find who they are as a learner (visual, auditory, kinaesthetic etc)
G8 - Now approaching the end of their journey, students focus more on how their self is perceived by others, and present who they are to their teachers.

By changing advisory group every year, students gain a greater diversity of experiences, and a series of different mentors. See them below...

Digging Deeper with Athletics

At the beginning of the year, High School students present all our athletic opportunities to Middle Schoolers.
Being introduced to our sports teams by older role models allows Middle Schoolers to think more aspirationally about who they want to be once they’re in HS. ‘Do I want to be a cool-headed swimmer, or a striker on the soccer team?’
There are 22 teams to choose from, and they’re scheduled to synchronize with extra-curricular clubs, so students can do both. Activities include:

  • Swimming
  • Cross Country
  • Track & Field
  • Golf
  • Table Tennis
  • Soccer
  • Basketball
  • Badminton
  • Softball
  • Tennis

Whether it’s the self-control experienced during golf, the teamwork in soccer, or the determination in cross country - Middle Schoolers have ample opportunity to discover their best suited soft skills in our athletics program.

Seizing Special Programs

For students to arm themselves with greater weapons against the greater challenges ahead, we have a range of voluntary and mandatory programs.

Ambitious young adventurers can run for a role in the MS StuCo (Student Council) during our fierce but fun StuCo Elections, which teaches kids how they, individually, can best connect with, and lead, a community.

All explorers are assigned a companion in our Buddy Program - pairing grades X and X, X and X, X and X - to teach older students how each of them can best be a role model.

For those who seek different tools, volunteering for our Dragon Ambassadors program allows chosen ambassadors to make long-lasting changes around our school such as XXX or XXX. What legacy does your child want to leave?

DEAR time (Drop Everything And Read) - twice per week students gain insight into vastly different life experiences through the power of books. But our Library is more than a welcoming space with over 6,600 physical books (plus many more digital resources), it is a hub of recreation hosting events such as Author Visits, Chess Tournaments, and XXXX.

Tournaments
Students travel to compete in academic, athletic, and artistic tournaments outside the campus, outside the country, and outside their comfort zone. There they learn about not just themselves, but how they relate to others - those with whom they must compete and those with whom they must cooperate - to discover the unique way that they best fit into roles in a team and how they best perform under pressure.

The Final Battle

All of the designs above should have now prepared your child with the Sense of Self they need to fulfill their destiny in High School... but first we must ensure they transition to the next phase in a way that carries over all those benefits.
