University Acceptances - An Early Glance

Around this time each year, seniors across the globe anxiously refresh their inboxes in anticipation of the response to their university application. And in that sense, this year is no different.

As students begin to receive their acceptances, a chapter is added to a greater story - a story of evaluating strengths and challenges, drafting essays, of discussing options - all during one-on-one sessions with one of our dedicated university guidance counselors.

Jemison Foster, University Guidance Counselor, discusses options with a student during the Fall Semester of 2019.

The list of university acceptances to date is a testament to our seniors’ hard-work and the extraordinary perseverance they’ve exhibited during the current global challenges. It’s also a testament to the comprehensive support that teachers, counselors, and advisors at SSIS offer students in preparation for  “a purposeful life as a global citizen.”

A part of these preparations is determining what the best university fit is for each of them, individually, based on academics, finances, geographical, and social needs. At SSIS, we believe that students thrive when they find their best fit. And when they thrive, they succeed.

Early in the year, University Guidance counselor Kelly Braun explains the application process to students.

We are excited to share the acceptance list so far, and a few of the students’ stories behind it. We are eager to follow the class of 2020 and the lasting impact they are sure to have on Vietnam, and the world.

Trinity University, Texas (United States)

Although this senior knew he wanted to study Computer Science, he struggled with pinning down where he wanted to study. After several conversations with his university guidance counselor, he learned about Trinity University in Texas, which runs a world-class computer science program. Taken by the small college feel of this well-resourced medium-sized university, he found his best fit.

The University of Cambridge, (United Kingdom)

It’s clear to anyone who speaks to this senior about chemistry, that it is more than a subject to him - it’s a visible passion. So we were not surprised that he made SSIS history, as the first-ever SSIS student to receive a conditional offer (normal for all UK universities) to Cambridge University. He is planning on studying Chemical Engineering at their Churchill College.

Columbia University, New York (United States)

Passionate about environmental issues, this senior found her best fit at Columbia University. Located in Manhattan, New York City, the school has an incredible engineering program that will allow her to pursue a degree in Environmental Science or Environmental Engineering. This student is set on making an impact and knows that New York City is the place to do just that.

Modul University, Vienna (Austria)

With Europe in mind, this senior was set on going to business school and evaluated options in Wales, Ireland, Scotland, and Spain. In the end, he ended up honing in on Dutch and Austrian universities, ultimately choosing Modul to immerse himself in a German-speaking culture, German being his mother tongue.

McGill University, Montreal (Canada)

From only looking at universities in warm-weather European countries, this senior returned to SSIS after a transformational summer. With a renewed sense of self, he was determined to apply to top Canadian schools. McGill University may be a bit colder than Spain, but he thrives in challenging environments and has an unwavering focus on where he wants to be in his professional life.

University of Amsterdam University College, University of Amsterdam, Leiden (NL)

Enrolled in both Biology and Chemistry HL this student has always been interested in the science behind sustainability. She wants to combine her strength in communications to build a platform to enact change. After seeing all the waste that is accumulated by restaurants, she wants to find a more sustainable solution for Vietnam and the food industry here.

Birmingham City University, University of Salford, (UK)

Planning on studying audio/sound engineering, this bass-guitar-playing student, designed equipment to test the relationship between the linear mass density of guitar strings with the frequency of sound. She’s clearly found a way to combine her love of music with her love of engineering.

Virginia Tech, Utah State, Arizona State, and Worcester Polytechnic Institute, (United States)

A regular at our IDEA center and a central figure on the VEX robotics team, this senior kindled an interest in engineering in the SSIS Lego Storm Club. Now, years later he’s set his sights on a career in this field. We’re excited to see which of his acceptances he chooses.

Chapman, Loyola Marymount University, University of Washington, Northeastern University, (United States)

This young entrepreneur has a mini-business creating healthy meals for friends and teachers. Seeing the need to support her peers on campus in creating better health habits, she started the SSIS Health Club. It’s no wonder that she will pursue studies in health and human sciences.
