University Guidance Counseling

Hero caption

Academics

At SSIS, every student is supported by a counselor who walks alongside them throughout all four years of high school.

That relationship is built over time, through social and emotional well-being, academic growth, and university planning. Your child's counselor will truly get to know them and support them in pursuing their future goals and aspirations.

The results speak for themselves; SSIS graduates go on to earn places at the most selective universities in the world.

The Journey to University

The university journey looks different for every student — but starting early makes all the difference. Here's what to focus on, year by year.

Moving from Grade 8 to Grade 9 brings a big shift in responsibility — but our counseling team is there every step of the way to make sure you and your family feel prepared and confident.

Grade 9 students in classroom
  • Attend the Rising 9 High School Introduction Assembly to learn what changes between middle and high school
  • Join the Counseling Team's evening information night with your parents — covering the transition and key things to know
  • Drop by the counseling team during their middle school office hours to ask any questions about courses, expectations, or school life
  • Get support during Grade 8 advisory sessions led by your future high school counselors
  • Participate in Step-Up Day in June — organized by student council to welcome you to high school
Gr. 9

University applications aren't reviewed by algorithms — they're read by real people who want to know who you are. Grade 9 is your chance to start becoming that person authentically.

Grade 9 students in classroom
  • Choose courses that genuinely interest you, not just what you think looks good on paper
  • Make new friends and explore clubs and activities that excite you
  • Build strong study skills for end-of-semester exams — habits formed now pay off later
  • Don't hesitate to ask teachers, counselors, or peers for help when needed
  • Try something outside your comfort zone — a sport, a new activity, a creative pursuit
  • Attend the High School Information Night with your parents to understand the road ahead
  • Consider volunteering or attending an academic camp during the summer
Gr. 10

Grade 10 is the year to sharpen your focus — academically and personally. Start narrowing in on what truly interests you, and begin imagining what comes next.

Grade 9 students in classroom
  • Take a range of courses and leave room for subjects that spark your curiosity
  • Take the PSAT and review your score report to understand where you stand
  • Solidify study habits that will carry you through Grade 11 and 12
  • Reflect on your transcript — are your grades telling the story you want to tell?
  • Begin exploring potential majors and university options that interest you
  • Talk to adults in your life about their own university and career experiences
  • Try to visit multiple universities during the summer — different types and sizes
Gr. 11

Grade 11 is widely considered the most critical year for university applications. Strong grades, meaningful activities, and early test preparation now will open doors later.

Grade 9 students in classroom
  • Create a testing schedule for SAT/ACT — aim to complete testing by spring of Grade 11
  • Begin preparing for standardised tests with dedicated study time
  • Attend college fairs and university visits, including the HCMC university fair
  • Research and build a list of universities that genuinely fit your goals and strengths
  • Start conversations with teachers about recommendation letters — early is always better
  • Keep your grades strong and stay active in the activities that matter most to you
Gr. 12

The moment you've been building toward. Start early, stay organised, and lean on your counselors — this is what they're here for.
