Elementary Extracurricular Activity Program
Ballet, badminton, soccer, basketball, art club, swim club, computer club, cooking, crafts, math games, board games, digital animation, newspaper, origami, sewing, chess, piano, martial arts and writing are offered to students in grades two through five after school by community members, parents and staff. The activities offered depend on the interests of our students and talents found within our community.Middle School/High School after school activities
The SSIS after school-activity program offers middle and high school students the opportunity to get involved in extracurricular activities and clubs. These activity sessions give students a chance to practice Balance in Life, one of our core values. There are a variety of activities offered, so students have a chance to try new activities or advance their skills in others.Community Action Programs
The SSIS Community Action Program helps students fulfill the core values of Dedicated Service, Sense of Self and Balance in Life. All SSIS high school students are expected to spend at least 60 hours participating in different activities to include both community projects and activity-based projects.Community projects are service tasks that will help students develop leadership and communication skills. Students must participate in at least two service activities each year. This may include activities such as:
- Student Council (providing service to classroom community)
- Tutoring an elementary or MS student (providing service to the school community)
- Volunteering for Operation Smile (providing service to the larger community)
Many opportunities to participate in service activities are arranged by the school, while others such as orphanage visits may be organized by the student.
Activity-based projects are the “Action” part of CAP, and these hours are fulfilled by involvement and participation in school or community activities. Students must participate in at least two activities each year. Examples of "Action" activities include:
- Being a member of a school or community organized sports team
- Participating in an after-school activity
- Joining a club (e.g., Global Issues Group)
Examples of Dedicated Service at SSIS
Fundraising
Last year, through our fundraising, we raised over $20,000 for various charities in the Ho Chi Minh area and in parts of Southeast Asia. Fundraising was done through a variety of formats such as charity concerts and games, concessions and bake sales, free-dress days, etc. These projects have helped foster our core value of dedicated service through helping others, and these in turn contribute to the holistic education promoted by SSIS.Together We Build
Our school-wide initiative for the 2008-2009 school year is to build a school for an impoverished district of Ho Chi Minh City. This goal was inspired by the UN Millennium Goal, which strives for educating all people, regardless of income levels or class. This project will provide elementary, middle, and secondary classes at SSIS the opportunity to focus on a particular part of the school’s construction, from conceptualization to reality, and the chance to work together to help less fortunate children towards a better life.Operation Smile Club
The Operation Smile Club promotes the international organization of Operation Smile by helping to raise awareness about the organization and by organizing fund-raising projects for local missions. The five pillars of the program are Leadership, Education, Awareness, Fund-raising and Service. Being part of this club helps students to build leadership skills, self-esteem and a lifelong commitment to serving others and teaches the importance of multiculturalism and social awareness. Our students have had the opportunity to join local missions to teach oral rehydration, burn care and prevention, proper nutrition and dental care to patients and families while the O.S. medical team provided free evaluations and surgery to children with cleft lips, cleft palates, tumors and burns . The students have also traveled to local schools and orphanages to give their healthcare presentations.
Global Issues Group
The SSIS Global Issues Group is a club that is involved with raising awareness about issues that range from trade, poverty and globalization, to human rights, geopolitics, the environment, and much more. The mission of GIG is not only to discuss these issues, but their greater goal is to “Take Action” and make a difference. Projects that the GIG club is involved with include the planning of the MS/HS International Day Celebration, participation in the Challenge 20/20 project and “Go Green” school initiatives. Our school is really good at helping others. -Theresa Grade 5
