Preface

The integration of technology into the learning program at SSIS has been accelerated by the widespread availability of reliable computer workstations with high-speed Internet access. Computer labs and classroom computers are stretched to their limits by students for course related activities, such as simulations, research and information gathering, word processing, data analysis, and publications. Throughout the school, teachers and students are now embracing electronic tools daily for lessons and activities and for online communication and homework.

Our reliance on electronic resources and communication tools stems from the need to provide SSIS students with the most effective learning environment possible. These tools are used to stimulate learning and extend the knowledge base of the student. At SSIS we have supported the changing needs of students by regularly updating resources, teacher skills, and curriculum goals. For example, the laptop carts use in the MS/HS, and the development of the scope and sequence of technology skills for students.

SSIS is now primed to move students and teachers further into what are considered the most effective 21st century learning environments. This environment shift includes increasing the wireless network zones, the development of an e-learning portal, the development of laptop program, and supporting home-to-school computing.

Moving Forward: The Future of Technology at SSIS

For teachers and students to be engaged in 21st century learning they need to have constant access to 21st century learning tools. The benefits of laptop learning make it a prudent option – students and teachers with laptop computers spend more time on task, are more independent, and more motivated.

At SSIS we are in a position to develop a plan for infusing mobile technology to create learning opportunities that extend beyond our classrooms. By capitalizing on the benefits of mobile technology we can present our students with unlimited learning.

The grid below outlines a possible overview of the transition to laptop/mobile computers.
