Special - Art

The elementary art program at SSIS is designed to develop creativity, self-esteem, imagination, perception, and appreciation of diverse cultures and genres of art. The ability to solve problems and make connections to the world around themselves is encouraged through discussion and reflection as students lead conversations about their own artwork and the art of others in the broader community and throughout history.Through this curriculum, students develop an appreciation for the arts and the art making processes.

The curriculum encourages personal expression involving deep cognitive processing such as interpretation, reflection, and inference with the basic skills of technique, composition, and design. Students explore a wide variety of media, art historical genres, and diverse cultural influences throughout the school year. Students work with sculptural forms, construction, and modeling as well as graphic design, brush technique, perspective drawing, and life drawing.

Theme based exhibitions of student artwork are ongoing though out the year in the Elementary Art Gallery area outside the two art rooms. In many instances, students write reflections, critiques, or poetry as a part of the presentation of their work. Extra-curricular art classes are offered for those students who wish to delve more deeply into their art. All students participate in a culminating end of the year all-school art exhibit and celebration of the visual arts.
