Kindergarten: Social Studies

Children have meaningful opportunities to explore the people, places and events in their world. They learn concepts about community, history, places, and culture through group discussions, stories, songs, dramatic play, community presentations, non-fiction materials and neighborhood excursions.

Children at this level are beginning to develop a sense of belonging to different social groups (e.g. family, classroom, school, and neighborhood) and an awareness of different cultures. They learn about citizenship through daily interactions with peers and adults and through their roles and responsibilities as members of a classroom. They begin to use language of time (e.g., day, night, yesterday, today) and learn to sequence their personal history through pictures.
