Kindergarten
Kindergarten students learn by being active participants who explore, experiment, and inquire. Students learn about themselves and the world around them - thinking and learning together in a caring community. In the classroom, students learn through whole group, small group, and individual activities. The classroom is organized into learning centers, which promote development in each of the physical, socio-emotional, and intellectual areas.Centers incorporate all core curriculum areas: language, math, science, and social studies. The active learning environment provides opportunities for children to make choices, use their imagination and creativity. Literacy development is supported through explicit teaching and modeling. Kindergarten students develop phonemic awareness and concepts of print as they begin to learn to read, write and draw pictures. Learning centers allow children to discover independently at their own pace and to master their environment. Play is an important part of the kindergarten curriculum. Through play, children are free to observe, reflect, create, take risks, master skills, and solve problems among peers and responsive adults. The kindergarten program strives for students to become independent and confident learners.
