Social Studies Goals
The grade five social studies program seeks to deepen the understanding of community, geography, history, culture and economics. Through timelines, students follow the path of 20th century history, learning how the culture each decade changes according to customs, fashions, major events, and technological inventions. Students learn how governments address the relationship between authority and liberty as they study the US Government and compare it to other forms of government. Economics is addressed when students explore the relationship between producers and consumers and the helpful or harmful impact of humans on the earth.Resources:

Students who successfully complete the grade five social studies program will:
- Demonstrate a knowledge of age-appropriate and relevant current events
- Understand the use of a timeline
- Understand how influential the events and people of the 20th century have an impact on today
- Understand that the geographic features of the earth influence migration and land use
- Know how the world is divided into many types of regions
- Understand the basic principles of government systems and compare and contrast these systems
- Understand the basic concepts of economics in terms of exchange of goods and services
