Grade 5
Fifth grade is a year of new learning as students take on added responsibility and begin the transition to middle school. The literacy program seeks to strengthen and consolidate the skills acquired in previous grades, while moving the students deeper in their understanding of texts, both narrative and expository. Students reflect on their reading orally and in writing with criteria and models, which support a more sophisticated delivery. New topics in mathematics include algebra, probability, ratios and rates. The science and social studies curriculum emphasizes an interactive discovery-based approach to learning. A variety of assessment tools are utilized, including rubrics, web-based inquiries, portfolios, presentations and individual and group projects. Grade five students use the scientific method, analyze various materials and media, and apply technology skills to support research and writing. The grade five program aims to provide students with the tools to be life-long, motivated learners who exemplify caring global citizens.
