Social Studies Goals

The grade three social studies program seeks to deepen the understanding of community, geography, history, culture and economics. Mapping skills help the students develop a sense of location in the world. The study of continents is integrated with a unit on world communities and exploration. Communities and cultures are a thread throughout the year, as grade three students offer insights into their home country and find similarities and differences between and among cultures.

Students who successfully complete the grade three social studies program will:

  • Demonstrate a knowledge of age-appropriate and relevant current events
  • Understand that communities evolve over time
  • Understand that communities are developed and run in different ways
  • Understand the interdependency between goods, services and resources
  • Understand that many factors influenced world exploration
  • Demonstrate an understanding of basic mapping skills
  • Explore home country cultures, similarities and differences
  • Demonstrate an awareness of the major geographical areas of the world
  • Demonstrate an open mind about other cultures
  • Research a specific topic
