Grade 3: Mathematics

The goal of the grade three mathematics program is to encourage students to develop strategies for problem-solving, to discover answers, and to recognize patterns. The curriculum offers opportunities for the self-discovery of concepts and personal strategies, as well as learning the traditional math operations. Manipulatives are used to provide concrete examples of abstract concepts. In grade three the students are encouraged to develop a conceptual, procedural, and experiential understanding of numbers and operations. Estimating and problem-solving strategies are developed toward the goal of greater math sense and stronger computational skills. Students are encouraged to challenge answers, and to share and evaluate errors.
