Grade 3

Third grade is the time when students consider their connections to their community as they become more independent and responsible. In grade three, students explore their own creativity and begin to respond to their world through more varied learning experiences. Students read across many genres, explore themes and ideas and begin to think more beyond the text. Students are able to read independently for increasing amounts of time and write about their reading. They engage in a workshop that supports narrative and nonfiction texts. Using the writing process helps students to reflect on specific writing components to improve writing. Grade three students develop a conceptual, procedural, and experiential understanding of numbers and operation. They investigate how world explorers have made a mark in today's society. They inquire into topics in life science, physical science and earth and space science. Through a myriad of experiences, third graders grow and develop their academic strengths, as well as their social and personal skills.
