Social Studies Goals

The grade one social studies program seeks to deepen the understanding of community, family and culture as students learn about geography and social structures. Students make observations about themselves, investigate their family history, and learn about children from around the world. They explore the difference between wants and needs, and learn how products move from the farm to our homes. Mapping neighborhoods and learning about the interdependence of community members is also integrated into specific customs and rituals of various cultures.

Students who successfully complete the grade one social studies program will:

  • Understand that culture is passed on through generations
  • Explore family history
  • Understand how money is used to satisfy our wants and needs
  • Understand the interdependency between goods, services and resources
  • Demonstrate an understanding of basic mapping skills
  • Understand that communities have rules, customs and rituals
