Grade 1
First grade is an exciting time of growth in which students begin to understand literacy, numeracy, community and scientific inquiry. Our young learners develop a love of reading through various means, in whole and small group venues. Discussion and many opportunities for conversation help develop oral language and communication skills. Grade one students focus accuracy, fluency, comprehension, and vocabulary. Writing develops as students engage in a workshop that supports narrative and nonfiction writing. They begin to discover patterns in numbers and basic mathematical concepts, and to understand a sense of geography and an appreciation of cultures through cross-curricular units. Children use the inquiry process to explore scientific questions. They engage in hands-on group activities to develop cooperative social skills.
