Elementary Curriculum Overview
Each child is nurtured to develop his/her full potential. Stimulating, hands-on materials promote active inquiry-based learning. Through a variety of curricular experiences, we focus on concept development and readiness for a lifetime of self-directed learning. Major goals are articulated in our Expected School-Wide Learning Results, which focus on our values of academic excellence, sense of self, dedicated service, balance in life and respect for all. These include valuing and appreciating Vietnamese culture. These core values are an integral part of everything we do.The integrated, literature-based language arts program provides children with opportunities to become independent readers, writers and thinkers. Basic numeration, exploring data, geometry, rules/patterns, operations, measuring, formal operations with whole numbers, fractions, decimals, logic, estimation, problem solving, probability and geometry are introduced at developmentally appropriate stages. Social studies address skills of family, community, geography, self and social awareness, economics, civics, and cultures. Through science, the children learn about plant and animal life, the earth and space, forces and energy, and the world around and beyond them. A major emphasis is placed on the children’s role in protecting the environment.
The American style education reflects an appreciation for the multi-cultural and international character of our student body. An extensive, but optional, after-school activities program provides opportunities for students to demonstrate balance in life and participate in a wide range of service activities, clubs, sports, art, and music.
